Scandinavian Orange Spice Cutouts

21 Days of Cookies: Day 14

These flavorful orange spice cutouts remind me of drinking a cup of the orange spice tea my husband likes so much. I like the twist on traditional sugar cookie cutouts, and these are so pretty — you can just see the spices and orange zest.

I piped a little royal icing on these to give them some visual interest, and I flavored the royal icing with a flavoring called fiori di sicilia. I love this stuff — it smells like, and makes your food taste like orange sherbet. So, a little orange frosting on an orange-spice cookie – perfect!

These cookies are soft and chewy, and sooooo flavorful. Give them a try when you’re in the mood for something different!

Scandinavian Orange Spice Cutouts

A soft and chewy orange spice cookie.
Servings: 36 cookies

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter lightly salted
  • ½ cup granulated white sugar
  • ½ cup dark corn syrup
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp orange zest (zest of one whole orange)
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, bring the corn syrup to a boil, then allow to cool to almost room temperature. I allowed mine to cool to 95 degrees F.
  • Cream butter and sugar together. Then gradually add cooled corn syrup to this mixture.
  • Beat in egg and orange zest.
  • Whisk together remaining ingredients in a separate bowl, then add gradually to creamed mixture.
  • Divide dough in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap, shaping into a disc. Refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours, or until easy to handle.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll 1/4" thick and cut into preferred shapes.
  • Bake on greased or parchment lined baking sheets at 375 for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly browning.
  • Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
