Q1. Do you have a storefront?  Can I stop by and pick up some cupcakes?
A. No, I work out of my home and I exclusively do custom orders.

Q2. How much notice do you need for an order?
A. As much as possible, please!  Two weeks is the bare minimum.  Because I only do custom orders, every order must be planned for, and shopped for individually.  Your cake is treated as if it is the most important cake I will ever make.  I do not keep supplies on hand for last-minute cakes.

Q3. Is it legal to have a home food business?
A. Yes.  As of September 1, 2011, the Texas Cottage Food Law goes into effect that allows sale of home baked goods, with a few restrictions.

Q4. How long have you been doing cakes?
A. I have been baking since I was a child, but began doing custom cakes in 2005.  It was then that Home Sweet Home Bakery was born.  When I found out it was illegal to sell homemade cakes, I used the kitchen of a local restaurant for a while, then moved to an hourly rental kitchen.  Sadly, I found both of them lacking in sanitation, not to mention expensive and inconvenient.  I gave up my cake business in 2008 due to a high risk pregnancy, and then chose not to resume it due to the aforementioned expense and hassle of rental kitchens.  In 2009 I funneled all my energy into passing the Texas Cottage Food Law so that I, and thousands like me, would be able to legally work from home.  After 2 1/2 years of work, we were rewarded in 2011 with the passage of SB 81.  Read more in the Austin American-Statesman.

Q5. Do you deliver?
A. Delivery is available on tiered cakes for $25.00 plus $.50 per mile, round trip.

Q6. Where are you located?
A. In Cedar Park near Lakeline Mall.

Q7. Can I just order a small cake?  We are only feeding a few.
A. Cakes can be ordered in any size!  However, the minimum order amount for custom cakes is $100.00. For a cake with basic decorations this is around 25 servings.

Q8. Can you make character cakes like Mickey Mouse or Hello Kitty??
A. I cannot reproduce a copyrighted character without permission from the copyright owner.  In most cases, this is prohibitively expensive, or just plain impossible.  The fines for copyright infringement can be steep, but it is also important to me to not use someone else's intellectual property without permission.  If your child has his or her heart set on a character cake, I can do a very cute "background" cake, and you can purchase a toy figurine to place on top, such as this "Cars" cake.  This is a great way for me not to get sued by a copyright holder, while still giving your child a cake he or she will love!

Q9: I have a big wedding coming up! Can I schedule a tasting and consultation?

That's wonderful and I am very happy for you! However because I have a very small operation, I am unable to offer tastings and consultations, and I must restrict my orders to 50 servings or less in order to maintain balance between my full time job, my family, and my love of baking and decorating.

Q10. How can I place an order?

A. Just send me an email at kelley@homesweethomebakery.com and I'll be happy to confirm availability, and design the perfect cake or cookie centerpiece for your special event!  I am thrilled to be able to work legally from home, and that I'm again able to help people celebrate life's most joyous occasions with delicious and beautiful baked goods, baked with love at my "Home Sweet Home".
